Stephen will discuss the development of the Anglican Episcopal Church, the Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui from 1800 when, under the Treaty of Nanjing, Hong Kong became a British Colony. This meant it was part of the Church of England. Chaplaincies were established in the Treaty Ports for English-speaking residents. It is of note that the American Episcopal Church founded St John’s University in Shanghai, which had a big influence on many subsequent Chinese leaders.

A particular focus of Stephen’s lecture will be Bishop R. O. Hall who, in the 1950’s, as Bishop of Hong and Macau, was a leader in coping with the refugees pouring into Hong Kong to escape the warfare in the mainland. He was specifically concerned with housing, welfare, education and employment. He was the moving force behind the development of Chung Chi College, later with others to become the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He also had a way with members of the business community, and was able to persuade them to support all sorts of projects.

Hong Kong’s story is one of amazing co-operation of the various Christian and other faith communities; of Government and the secular world, and to be one of the leading cities in the latter half of the nineteenth century in that part of the world.

Canon Stephen Sidebotham held the following positions in the church in Hong Kong:-

Chaplain St John’s Cathedral 1964-1970
Vicar of Christchurch Kowloon Tong 1970-1976
Dean of St. John’s Cathedral 1976-1982

He also had considerable involvement in education and welfare and was founder of the China Coast Community for non Chinese elderly people.

He was made an Honorary Canon of St. John’s Cathedral by Archbishop Peter Kwong in recognition of his eighteen years of service in Hong Kong.
