Vacancy: Collections Assistant (0.6 FTE, six months) Royal Asiatic Society

Collections Assistant, Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland (London)

Salary: £25,000 pro rata (0.6 FTE), from July 2023 – until January 2024

The Royal Asiatic Society is seeking a part-time Collections Assistant for three days a week. This role is offered on a temporary basis to ensure smooth running of our heritage services during a member of staff’s parental leave.

Working under the supervision of the Society’s Archivist, the Collections Assistant will help deliver services in our Reading Room, supporting visiting researchers and answering remote enquiries about services and collections. Additionally, the Collections Assistant may be asked to assist with collections care, and will receive appropriate instruction to do so. They will be expected to assist with the preparation of the Society’s exhibition, Extraordinary Endeavours, which will take place at the SOAS Brunei Gallery between October and December 2023; and may be asked to assist with other cultural events taking place at the Society.

The Royal Asiatic Society celebrates its bicentenary in 2023, making this a particularly exciting time to work with us. This role may especially suit those seeking to gain experience working in the heritage sector, especially with Asian collections, or those with a particular interest in the Society and its work.

Ideally, the Collections Assistant should be able to work during the Library’s usual opening hours: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, between 09:30 and 17:30. Some flexibility and additional hours may be possible, but please note that this role is not suitable for home working. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
