Collected Works of Sir William Jones donated to the Society
Yesterday, Thursday 12th January marked the start of events to celebrate the Society’s bicentenary. As part of the celebrations Professor Michael Loewe has donated a set of the first edition of the Collected Works of Sir William Jones (8 quarto volumes, edited by Lady Jones) and the associated Life of Jones by Lord Teignmouth. Professor Loewe’s gift was honoured by our President, Professor Sarah Ansari, before Professor Javed Majeed FBA lectured on the academic and cultural significance of Sir William Jones’s scholarship.
The books were displayed in the Reading Room to be examined and enjoyed by attendees of the event. We would like to again thank Professor Michael Loewe for the volumes and Dr Gordon Johnson for his enabling of the gift.
