Dr Edward Anderson on Hindu nationalism abroad

We are pleased that our lecture series for 2017 is already underway, thanks to a lecture from Dr Edward Anderson, Smuts Research Fellow in Commonwealth Studies, University of Cambridge. Dr Anderson spoke on “Hindu nationalism abroad: the Indian diaspora and Hindutva’s early transnational development (1946-77)”. In particular, his lecture focussed on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), looking at its origins, its development among diasporic communities outside India, and its place in the Hindu nationalist movement in India and abroad.

Attendees who braved the inclement weather to enjoy Dr Anderson’s talk were able to appreciate a knowledgeable and stimulating presentation. The lecture was followed by a lengthy discussion,  with a number of questions including on the conception of “muscularity” in the rhetoric of nationalist ideology. The lecture was followed by a reception.
