SUMMARY:George Manginis Book Launch: Mount Sinai
DESCRIPTION:‘Lucid and original; a veritable feast of interesting stories about Mt Sinai’s extraordinary past’ \n– Peter Frankopan\, author of The Silk Roads \n  \n‘As a traveller and pilgrim to Sinai on numerous occasions and now a Trustee of the St Catherine’s Foundation\, I greatly enjoyed George Manginis’s Mount Sinai and learnt much from it … The book is a learned and delightful compassion to God-trodden Sinai’ \n– Richard Chartres\, Bishop of London \n  \n‘This book is an absolute mine of riches\, reflection\, and information … I would strongly encourage anyone to pay a visit to this remarkable place of history\, holiness and tradition. I recommend this book highly.’ \n– Vincent Nichols\, Cardinal of Westminster \n  \n‘George Manginis has trawled archives and published accounts to create the biography of the mountain\, telling the story of the devout\, the scholars and the tourists who have helped shape its history. His book is likely to stand as the last word on one of the world’s most enduring places\, unless an angel appears to tell the divine side of the story’ \n– Anthony Sattin \n  \nMount Sinai examines the history of Hagia Koryphē (in Greek) and Jabal Mūsā (in Arabic): a mountain peak above the Monastery of St Catherine at South Sinai in Egypt. Known for centuries as the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God\, as described in Exodus\, the book explores the ways in which the landscape of the summit of Mount Sinai was experienced and transformed\, using textual criticism\, historical analysis\, art history and\, for the first time\, archaeological interpretation. Beginning in the third century AD\, when the identification of the Biblical ‘Mount Sinai’ was established\, Mount Sinai extends through to the early twentieth century. Covering the natural environment\, the Bedouin and early Christians\, the importance of Mount Sinai in Muslim tradition\, the cult of St Catherine\, pilgrimage\, as well as the scholarly\, artistic and tourist phenomenon of the nineteenth century\, Mount Sinai is a comprehensive and complete history of this remarkable place. \n  \nGeorge Manginis has taught at the University of Edinburgh\, SOAS – The University of London\, the British Museum\, the Benaki Museum in Athens and the New College of the Humanities in London. In 2013 he was a Stanley J Seeger Fellow at Princeton University.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Kathmandu by Thomas Bell
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a book launch and lecture by Thomas Bell on Kathmandu (forthcoming from Haus Publishing\, April 2016).\nProf. David Gellner will give an introduction and chair the Q & A session after the lecture. The event is free and open to all\, and will be followed by a reception and book signing.\nProceeds from booksales on the night will be donated to CITTA a charity that promotes health\, education and economic development in deprived communities. \nKATHMANDU \n by Thomas Bell \n Kathmandu is the greatest city of the Himalaya; a place where unique cultural practices that died out in India a thousand years ago have survived. It is a carnival of sexual license and hypocrisy\, a jewel of world art\, a hotbed of communist revolution\, a paradigm of failed democracy\, a case study in bungled Western intervention\, and an environmental catastrophe. \n Closed to the outside world until 1951 and trapped in a medieval time warp\, Kathmandu’s rapid modernisation is an extreme version of what is happening in many traditional societies. The many layers of the city’s development are reflected in the successive generations of its gods and goddesses\, witches and ghosts\, the comforts of caste\, the ethos of aristocracy and kingship\, and the lately destabilising spirits of consumer aspiration\, individuality\, egalitarianism\, communism and democracy. Erudite\, entertaining and accessible\, it is the fascinating chronicle of a unique city. \nThomas Bell studied at Oxford and the Courtauld Institute of Art before moving to Kathmandu to cover the civil war in Nepal for the Daily Telegraph and The Economist. He was later Southeast Asia correspondent for the Daily Telegraph.\n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Inshallah\, football and Discussion with Ashvin Kumar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Ashvin Kumar’s film Inshallah\, football. The film will be followed by Ashvin discussing his upcoming \,Noor. \nInshallah\, football – Basharat is an 18 year old soccer player coached by a gritty couple from South America. He has been selected to play in Brazil. This is his big ticket out of a state ravaged by years of brutal insurgencies — except he is being denied a passport by the government of India. Basharat’s father\, Bashir\, was a militant who surrendered and spent years in jail\, endured torture at infamous interrogation centers of the same government. According to the unwritten rules in Kashmir\, an ex-militant’s family is almost never granted a passport — that document of belonging of a country that claims Kashmiri identity as part of its own. Inshallah\, football is about the difficulty of dreaming in Kashmir. \nAshvin Kumar is the youngest Indian Oscar® nominee\, also nominated for European Film Academy for Little Terrorist\, which has toured more than one hundred and fifty international festivals\, picking-up awards in twenty-five of them\, including BAFTA/LA. \n\n\nMore recently\, two-time National Award winner\, in consecutive years for Inshallah\, football and Inshallah\, Kashmir\, two feature documentary films about Kashmir. \nAshvin’s next project\, his third in Kashmir\, is a feature-film called ‘Noor’ – the story of an adolescent girl whose journey find her ‘disappeared’ father has her discovering mass-graves. The project was selected at NFDC Film Bazaar 2012\, IFP’s No Borders in 2013\, Mumbai Mantra Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab 2014 and Asia Pacific Screen Academy screenplay award winner. \nInshallah\, football is the story of a talented Kashmiri football player who’s dreams of training in Santos (Pele’s club) in Brazil are stymied by the Indian government’s refusal to give him a passport because his father was a militant\, fighting against the Indian armed forces in the uprising in Kashmir in the ‘90s. It also won a grant from the Asian Cinema Fund\, Pusan Film Festival\, Special Jury award at Dubai\, Silver Conch at Mumbai\, Audience-Award at Asiatic Film Mediale and Best Non-fiction and Best Editing at IDPA (Indian Documentary Producers Association). It was part of official-selections of Doc-Liepzig\, film-makers as change-makers and INPUT 2012\, TV and Public Interest\, Sydney; besides being in-competition at Pusan\, Chicago\, NYIFF\, NJISACF international film-festivals.

SUMMARY:Book Launch - The Boxer Codex
DESCRIPTION:George Bryan Souza\, University of Texas\, San Antonio\, and Jeffrey S. Turley\, Brigham Young University \n\n\n\n\nIn The Boxer Codex\, the editors have transcribed\, translated and annotated an illustrated late-16th century Spanish manuscript. It is a special source that provides evidence for understanding early-modern geography\, ethnography and history of parts of the western Pacific\, as well as major segments of maritime and continental South-east Asia and East Asia. Although portions of this gem of a manuscript have been known to specialists for nearly seven decades\, this is the first complete transcription and English translation\, with critical annotations and apparatus\, and reproductions of all its illustrations\, to appear in print.
