SUMMARY:Shireen El Kassem Mamluk helmets (1250—1517): new perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Despite the significance that has been accorded by the Mamluks to the military production\, Mamluk military art is rarely considered as a part of the Islamic art field. Helmets were intended not only for the protection but also for the public display during the Mamluk period (1250–1517)\, and thus played a considerable role in decorative arts. In this lecture\, the discussion will focus on the production and development of Mamluk helmets\, and the social and military importance they acquired within the Mamluk society. \n  \nShireen El Kassem obtained her BA degree in History of Art and Archaeology from the Sorbonne-University (Paris IV) and MA degree in Islamic Art and Architecture from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. She is currently the assistant curator at the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic art. Her main research interests are in material culture and cross-cultural exchanges in the Mamluk Sultanate between 1250 and 1517\, especially in Mamluk arms and armour\, metalwork and textiles.

SUMMARY:George Manginis Book Launch: Mount Sinai
DESCRIPTION:‘Lucid and original; a veritable feast of interesting stories about Mt Sinai’s extraordinary past’ \n– Peter Frankopan\, author of The Silk Roads \n  \n‘As a traveller and pilgrim to Sinai on numerous occasions and now a Trustee of the St Catherine’s Foundation\, I greatly enjoyed George Manginis’s Mount Sinai and learnt much from it … The book is a learned and delightful compassion to God-trodden Sinai’ \n– Richard Chartres\, Bishop of London \n  \n‘This book is an absolute mine of riches\, reflection\, and information … I would strongly encourage anyone to pay a visit to this remarkable place of history\, holiness and tradition. I recommend this book highly.’ \n– Vincent Nichols\, Cardinal of Westminster \n  \n‘George Manginis has trawled archives and published accounts to create the biography of the mountain\, telling the story of the devout\, the scholars and the tourists who have helped shape its history. His book is likely to stand as the last word on one of the world’s most enduring places\, unless an angel appears to tell the divine side of the story’ \n– Anthony Sattin \n  \nMount Sinai examines the history of Hagia Koryphē (in Greek) and Jabal Mūsā (in Arabic): a mountain peak above the Monastery of St Catherine at South Sinai in Egypt. Known for centuries as the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God\, as described in Exodus\, the book explores the ways in which the landscape of the summit of Mount Sinai was experienced and transformed\, using textual criticism\, historical analysis\, art history and\, for the first time\, archaeological interpretation. Beginning in the third century AD\, when the identification of the Biblical ‘Mount Sinai’ was established\, Mount Sinai extends through to the early twentieth century. Covering the natural environment\, the Bedouin and early Christians\, the importance of Mount Sinai in Muslim tradition\, the cult of St Catherine\, pilgrimage\, as well as the scholarly\, artistic and tourist phenomenon of the nineteenth century\, Mount Sinai is a comprehensive and complete history of this remarkable place. \n  \nGeorge Manginis has taught at the University of Edinburgh\, SOAS – The University of London\, the British Museum\, the Benaki Museum in Athens and the New College of the Humanities in London. In 2013 he was a Stanley J Seeger Fellow at Princeton University.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Kathmandu by Thomas Bell
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a book launch and lecture by Thomas Bell on Kathmandu (forthcoming from Haus Publishing\, April 2016).\nProf. David Gellner will give an introduction and chair the Q & A session after the lecture. The event is free and open to all\, and will be followed by a reception and book signing.\nProceeds from booksales on the night will be donated to CITTA a charity that promotes health\, education and economic development in deprived communities. \nKATHMANDU \n by Thomas Bell \n Kathmandu is the greatest city of the Himalaya; a place where unique cultural practices that died out in India a thousand years ago have survived. It is a carnival of sexual license and hypocrisy\, a jewel of world art\, a hotbed of communist revolution\, a paradigm of failed democracy\, a case study in bungled Western intervention\, and an environmental catastrophe. \n Closed to the outside world until 1951 and trapped in a medieval time warp\, Kathmandu’s rapid modernisation is an extreme version of what is happening in many traditional societies. The many layers of the city’s development are reflected in the successive generations of its gods and goddesses\, witches and ghosts\, the comforts of caste\, the ethos of aristocracy and kingship\, and the lately destabilising spirits of consumer aspiration\, individuality\, egalitarianism\, communism and democracy. Erudite\, entertaining and accessible\, it is the fascinating chronicle of a unique city. \nThomas Bell studied at Oxford and the Courtauld Institute of Art before moving to Kathmandu to cover the civil war in Nepal for the Daily Telegraph and The Economist. He was later Southeast Asia correspondent for the Daily Telegraph.\n \n  \n
