SUMMARY:Book Launch. Shadow States: India\, China and the Himalayas\, 1910–1962 (Bérénice Guyot-Réchard\, King's College London)
DESCRIPTION:Since the mid-twentieth century China and India have entertained a difficult relationship\, erupting into open war in 1962. Shadow States is the first book to unpack Sino-Indian tensions from the angle of competitive state-building – through a study of their simultaneous attempts to win the approval and support of the Himalayan people. When China and India tried to expand into the Himalayas in the twentieth century\, their lack of strong ties to the region and the absence of an easily enforceable border made their proximity threatening – observing China and India’s state-making efforts\, local inhabitants were in a position to compare and potentially choose between them. Using rich and original archival research\, Bérénice Guyot-Réchard shows how India and China became each other’s ‘shadow states’. Understanding these recent\, competing processes of state formation in the Himalayas is fundamental to understanding the roots of tensions in Sino-Indian relations.

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Rum Seljuq Architecture\, 1170-1220: The Patronage of Sultans\, by Richard P McClary
DESCRIPTION:Studies the key monuments built for the Rum Seljuq sultans\, 1170-1220\nThis lavishly illustrated volume presents the major surviving monuments of the early period of the Rum Seljuqs\, the first major Muslim dynasty to rule Anatolia. A much-needed overview of the political history of the dynasty provides the context for the study of the built environment which follows. The book addresses the most significant monuments from across the region: a palace\, a minaret and a hospital are studied in detail\, along with an overview of the decorative portals attached to a wide array of different building types. The case studies are used to demonstrate the key themes and processes of architectural synthesis and development that were under way at the time\, and how they reflect the broader society. \n  \nFree and open to all. RSVP to Amy Riach ar at royalasiaticsociety.org

SUMMARY:Botanical Indian Miniature Painting Course with Sam Buckley of PSTA
DESCRIPTION:Every Saturday in February 2017\, 10AM to 4.30PM \nPlease book directly with The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts https://psta.org.uk/open-programme/botanical-indian-miniature-painting \nThis course will encapsulate both the Indian Miniature technique and the western art of botanical painting. \nBased on a beautiful collection of 51 flower paintings from Bengal in the 19th Century \, this course will guide you through the techniques of miniature painting \, using traditional pigments and Indian papers . \nThese paintings combine the western interest in flower studies and the Eastern tradition of fine workmanship to create both accurate and beautifully decorative botanical art . \nStudents will work from one of these original flower paintings \, learning how to construct a miniature painting \, prepare their own paints \, use traditional brushes to create the detail required for these delicate images . \nStudents will be asked to bring their own watercolour brushes\, either synthetic or natural sable. The sizes will be specified closer to the date of the course. \nAll other materials will be provided in the class. \nTutor biography\n\nSam Buckley\nSamantha Buckley is an Indian miniature painter who has designed work for The Highgrove Shop in Tetbury\, and Traditional Arts in London. In 2010 Samantha contributed two painted elephant sculptures to Elephant Parade\, an event in London raising money for the Asian Elephant. In 2011 she was invited by the renowned artist Dr Desmond Lazaro to undertake a one-year apprenticeship in India to extend her knowledge and technique of miniature painting\, developing work for an exhibition in London at The Ben Brown Gallery. She completed her MA at The School in 2006\, receiving a distinction for her studies in miniature painting.
