SUMMARY:Friends of the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong Branch
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and lunch                                                                                           \nSaturday\, 28th October \nThe expulsion of the Chinese Army from Tibet \nSpeaker:                     Roger Croston\, independent researcher \nTime:                          2:30 p.m. \nVenue:                        Royal Asiatic Society\, 14 Stephenson Way\, London NW1 2HD \nCost:                           £8 per member or guest\, to include refreshments \nLunch:                        A self-paying lunch will be arranged at 12:30 p.m. at ‘Red and Hot’\, 37 Chalton Street\, NW1 1JD. Please note on the booking form if you wish to join the lunch. \nBooking:                     Paul Bolding at paul@paulbolding.org.uk or tel: 0207 684 5811. \nFollowing the Chinese revolution in 1911\, the Tibetans seized their chance for independence and\, after fierce fighting in Lhasa\, expelled the Chinese Army. Most were dispatched to British India and Willoughby was commanded to ensure their safe passage\, by neutral British military assistance\, in a humanitarian action. This little known\, little researched episode\, is well documented in Willoughby’s rare report which he donated to the RSAA. A discovery\, in 2013\, of a private photograph album of a British Civil Servant based in Sikkim\, who assisted with the transport\, has led to new research on this episode.

SUMMARY:Professor Francis Robinson (Royal Holloway)\, Marion Molteno and Dr. Rakhshanda Jalil: Introducing the New Edition of Ralph Russell's Anthology of Urdu Literature A Thousand Yearnings
DESCRIPTION:For many people\, Urdu is indelibly associated with a bygone era: the cultural renaissance of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the face of colonial oppression\, heady mushairas and romantic poetry. For others\, it brings to mind the gritty prose of the Progressive Writers portraying the grim social realities of the mid-twentieth century. \nIn this luminous collection of Urdu poetry and prose\, Ralph Russell expands our world of Urdu letters to include folk and oral narratives\, besides prose and poetry. By situating each form historically\, he gives us a refreshing perspective on the diverse literary cultures and histories of India. \nBesides canonical short stories by the likes of Manto and Premchand\, there is Ismat Chughtai’s little-known autobiographical essay about her relationship with her brother\, the writer Azim Beg Chughtai. There are creation tales from the Quran\, popular stories of Akbar and Birbal\, along with the legendary exploits of Sikandar (Alexander the Great). Selections from the sublime poetry of Mir\, Ghalib and others are supplemented by astute commentary and roman transcriptions of the original Urdu. Farhatullah Beg’s brilliantly imagined account of the ‘last Delhi mushaira’ captures a moment in time never seen again\, with the horrors of 1857 just around the corner. \nAn accessible introduction for unfamiliar readers\, and a pleasurable companion for those familiar with Urdu literature\, this volume is a treasure trove of stories\, poetry and history. Originally published as Hidden in the Lute (1995)\, this revised edition has been edited by Russell’s student and friend for several years\, the novelist Marion Molteno.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Bruno de Nicola Women in Mongol Iran
DESCRIPTION:Bruno De Nicola investigates the development of women’s status in the Mongol Empire from its original homeland in Mongolia up to the end of the Ilkhanate of Iran in 1335. Taking a thematic approach\, the chapters show a coherent progression of this development and contextualise the evolution of the role of women in medieval Mongol society. The arrangement serves as a starting point from where to draw comparison with the status of Mongol women in the later period. Exploring patterns of continuity and transformation in the status of these women in different periods of the Mongol Empire as it expanded westwards into the Islamic world\, the book offers a view on the transformation of a nomadic-shamanist society from its original homeland in Mongolia to its settlement in the mostly sedentary-Muslim Iran in the mid-13th century.

SUMMARY:Book Launch. Shadow States: India\, China and the Himalayas\, 1910–1962 (Bérénice Guyot-Réchard\, King's College London)
DESCRIPTION:Since the mid-twentieth century China and India have entertained a difficult relationship\, erupting into open war in 1962. Shadow States is the first book to unpack Sino-Indian tensions from the angle of competitive state-building – through a study of their simultaneous attempts to win the approval and support of the Himalayan people. When China and India tried to expand into the Himalayas in the twentieth century\, their lack of strong ties to the region and the absence of an easily enforceable border made their proximity threatening – observing China and India’s state-making efforts\, local inhabitants were in a position to compare and potentially choose between them. Using rich and original archival research\, Bérénice Guyot-Réchard shows how India and China became each other’s ‘shadow states’. Understanding these recent\, competing processes of state formation in the Himalayas is fundamental to understanding the roots of tensions in Sino-Indian relations.

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Rum Seljuq Architecture\, 1170-1220: The Patronage of Sultans\, by Richard P McClary
DESCRIPTION:Studies the key monuments built for the Rum Seljuq sultans\, 1170-1220\nThis lavishly illustrated volume presents the major surviving monuments of the early period of the Rum Seljuqs\, the first major Muslim dynasty to rule Anatolia. A much-needed overview of the political history of the dynasty provides the context for the study of the built environment which follows. The book addresses the most significant monuments from across the region: a palace\, a minaret and a hospital are studied in detail\, along with an overview of the decorative portals attached to a wide array of different building types. The case studies are used to demonstrate the key themes and processes of architectural synthesis and development that were under way at the time\, and how they reflect the broader society. \n  \nFree and open to all. RSVP to Amy Riach ar at royalasiaticsociety.org
