SUMMARY:Book Launch and Discussion: Malarial Subjects by Rohan Deb Roy
DESCRIPTION:Simon Layton (Chair). Speakers include Dr. Nayanika Mathur (Oxford)\, Professor Clare Anderson (Leicester)\, Professor Richard Drayton (King’s College\, London)\,\nDr. Sujit Sivasundaram (Cambridge)\, Professor Simon Schaffer (Cambridge) \nMalaria was considered one of the most widespread disease-causing entities in the nineteenth century. It was associated with a variety of frailties far beyond fevers\, ranging from idiocy to impotence. And yet\, it was not a self-contained category. The reconsolidation of malaria as a diagnostic category during this period happened within a wider context in which cinchona plants and their most valuable extract\, quinine\, were reinforced as objects of natural knowledge and social control. In India\, the exigencies and apparatuses of British imperial rule occasioned the close interactions between these histories. In the process\, British imperial rule became entangled with a network of nonhumans that included\, apart from cinchona plants and the drug quinine\, a range of objects described as malarial\, as well as mosquitoes. Malarial Subjects explores this history of the co-constitution of a cure and disease\, of British colonial rule and nonhumans\, and of science\, medicine and empire.\nPublisher: Cambridge University Press\nISBN: 9781107172364\nNumber of pages: 346\nWeight: 700 g\nDimensions: 228 x 152 x 21 mm

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture: Emilie Wellfelt\, 'Following the Feathers: Global History Along the Trails of the Bird of Paradise'
DESCRIPTION:‘Following the Feathers’ is an investigation of global history and human-animal relations using a spectacular bird species as its focal point. It asks how the bird of paradise affects humans who encounter them\, either in living form or as a prepared specimen. The specimen\, often without wings\, legs and scull bone\, is the main form in which bird of paradise have been traded and used by humans.   \n   Historically the bird of paradise was a luxury commodity\, traded along the same routes as spice from Maluku. As the birds were received in different ‘worlds’ they were used and interpreted in ways that reveal insights about religion\, paradise and power. \n   The study examines two time periods: c. 1512-1610 and the present. The first bird of paradise specimens reached Europe in 1522 in the cargo of the world’s first circumnavigators\, the Magellan expedition. In the early modern period\, world views shifted and Muslims and Christians competed for global dominion. ‘Following the feathers’ takes us to crucial moments in history\, to kings and sultans\, and to the foremost artists and scientists of the time.  \n   In the present study\, human-animal relations in the Aru Islands will be investigated. In the islands the Dobel-speaking population are divided in two moieties\, the inland fanan\, literary ‘bird of paradise’\, have a semi-totemic relation to the species. \nThe researcher has extensive historical and anthropological fieldwork experience from Indonesia. \n  \n  \n‘Shahjahan and Prince Dara-Shikoh Toy with Jewels\, ca. 1620’

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Pagan Christmas by Augusto Cacopardo
DESCRIPTION:PAGAN CHRISTMAS: WINTER FEASTS OF THE KALASHA OF THE HINDU KUSH \nBOOK LAUNCH & DISCUSSION WITH AUTHOR \nThis authoritative work sheds light on the religious world of the Kalasha people of the Birir valley of the Pakistani district of Chitral\, focusing on their winter feasts which culminate in a great winter solstice festival. The Kalasha represent the last example of the pre-Islamic cultures of the Hindu Kush/Karakorum\, but are also the only observable example\, worldwide\, of an archaic Indo-European religion. Cacopardo addresses the historical and cultural context of the area and\, referencing an array of relevant literature\, offers comparisons with the Indian world and the religious folklore of Europe. \nInterdisciplinary and based on extensive field research\, Pagan Christmas is the first extended ethnographic study devoted to this little known Kalasha community and represents a standard international reference source on the anthropology\, ethnography and history of religions of Pakistan and Central South Asia. \nAugusto S. Cacopardo has conducted anthropological research in Pakistan under the aegis of the Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente and is Professor of Ethnography at the University of Florence. \n \n

SUMMARY:Friends of the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong Branch
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and lunch                                                                                           \nSaturday\, 25th November \nThe Irishmen who policed old Hong Kong \nSpeaker:                     Patricia O’Sullivan \nTime:                          2:30 p.m. \nVenue:                        Royal Asiatic Society\, 14 Stephenson Way\, London NW1 2HD \nCost:                           £8 per member or guest\, to include refreshments \nLunch:                        A self-paying lunch will be arranged at 12:45 p.m. at Chutneys\, 124 Drummond Street\, London NW1 2PA (corner of North Gower Street.)  Tel: 020 7388 0604. Please tell Paul if you wish to join the lunch. \nBooking:                     Paul Bolding at paul@paulbolding.org.uk or tel: 0207 684 5811. \n  \nVictorian and Edwardian Hong Kong was a melting pot of cultures\, classes and races\, where all were aiming to improve their lot and make money in the congested city.  For the Hong Kong Police\, the usual fare of maintaining order in the steep streets and winding alleys was periodically enlivened by the challenges of investigating triad murders\, violent gang robberies\, kidnappings etc.  In addition\, they had to avoid the ever present diseases which lurked through the city\, including malaria\, typhoid fever and smallpox. \nPatricia O’Sullivan’s recent book\, Policing Hong Kong – an Irish History portrays the lives of a score of men\, all from the small town of Newmarket\, Co. Cork\, Ireland\, who made the six-week journey to serve in the Hong Kong Police Force between 1864 and 1950.  Here they would investigate mysterious murders\, engage in running gun battles and search Chinese junks for pirates\, weapons and opium.  One man made his fortune\, whilst another was caught up in a gambling scandal that ended his career and yet another lost his life in the biggest assault that the criminal world had made on the Police Force.  Meanwhile\, over the years they brought their Newmarket brides back to Hong Kong and built a close knit community of their own. \nIn this talk Patricia will share some of their police cases\, give a glimpse of their lives in Colonial Hong Kong and explain some of the research methods for this unique story.  Since completion of the book\, Patricia has been researching\, amongst other things\, criminal women in pre-war Hong Kong and the Irish diaspora in the RAColonial Service.  Her career as a music teacher has now been laid to one side in order to spend more time on Hong Kong’s fascinating history.

SUMMARY:Charles Allen History and Myth: India and Britain Seventy Years On
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating exploration of the roots of Indian history by the acclaimed author of Ashoka.\n\nCoromandel was the name given by European traders to India’s south-eastern seaboard\, a corruption of the Tamil Cholamandalam\, after the temple-building Chola kings who ruled the southern peninsula for centuries prior to the Islamic invasions. \nIndian history tends to focus on Northern India\, but Coromandel will journey south\, exploring the less well-known\, often neglected and very different history and identity of the oldest India in the pre-Aryan Dravidian south. Highly acclaimed historian Charles Allen explores the astonishing Buddhist and Jain civilisations that flourished all along India’s eastern seaboard before Hinduism became the established religion. \nIn Coromandel\, Allen continues his investigation into early Indian history\, begun in Ashoka. At each point in his journey through the Indian south he meets local historians\, gurus\, politicians and other colourful personalities\, and with their help uncovers some extraordinary stories about the past. This is a traveller’s tale\, and as Allen moves through contemporary India\, he discovers as much about the present as he does about the past. \n\nBiographical Notes \nCharles Allen is the author of a number of bestselling books about India and the colonial experience elsewhere. He is a traveller\, historian and master storyteller. \n2nd November Charles Allen

Please note on the booking form if you wish to join the lunch. \nBooking:                     Paul Bolding at paul@paulbolding.org.uk or tel: 0207 684 5811. \nFollowing the Chinese revolution in 1911\, the Tibetans seized their chance for independence and\, after fierce fighting in Lhasa\, expelled the Chinese Army. Most were dispatched to British India and Willoughby was commanded to ensure their safe passage\, by neutral British military assistance\, in a humanitarian action. This little known\, little researched episode\, is well documented in Willoughby’s rare report which he donated to the RSAA. A discovery\, in 2013\, of a private photograph album of a British Civil Servant based in Sikkim\, who assisted with the transport\, has led to new research on this episode.

SUMMARY:Professor Francis Robinson (Royal Holloway)\, Marion Molteno and Dr. Rakhshanda Jalil: Introducing the New Edition of Ralph Russell's Anthology of Urdu Literature A Thousand Yearnings
DESCRIPTION:For many people\, Urdu is indelibly associated with a bygone era: the cultural renaissance of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the face of colonial oppression\, heady mushairas and romantic poetry. For others\, it brings to mind the gritty prose of the Progressive Writers portraying the grim social realities of the mid-twentieth century. \nIn this luminous collection of Urdu poetry and prose\, Ralph Russell expands our world of Urdu letters to include folk and oral narratives\, besides prose and poetry. By situating each form historically\, he gives us a refreshing perspective on the diverse literary cultures and histories of India. \nBesides canonical short stories by the likes of Manto and Premchand\, there is Ismat Chughtai’s little-known autobiographical essay about her relationship with her brother\, the writer Azim Beg Chughtai. There are creation tales from the Quran\, popular stories of Akbar and Birbal\, along with the legendary exploits of Sikandar (Alexander the Great). Selections from the sublime poetry of Mir\, Ghalib and others are supplemented by astute commentary and roman transcriptions of the original Urdu. Farhatullah Beg’s brilliantly imagined account of the ‘last Delhi mushaira’ captures a moment in time never seen again\, with the horrors of 1857 just around the corner. \nAn accessible introduction for unfamiliar readers\, and a pleasurable companion for those familiar with Urdu literature\, this volume is a treasure trove of stories\, poetry and history. Originally published as Hidden in the Lute (1995)\, this revised edition has been edited by Russell’s student and friend for several years\, the novelist Marion Molteno.
