SUMMARY:"Saragarhi: The True Story" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:When 21 Sikh soldiers stood against 10\,000 men: the battle of Saragarhi\n\nIn the late 19th century\, tensions were heightened between Britain and Russia as the nations battled over territories in central Asia. British forces held vulnerable posts on the colonial border between British India and Afghanistan\, threatened by both Russian forces and Afghan tribes. Here\, Captain Jay Singh-Sohal explores the events that occurred 120 years ago this month at the battle of Saragarhi\, which saw a British outpost surrounded by 10\,000 Afghan tribesmen\, and shares the remarkable story of a valiant last stand that would reverberate around the British empire…

SUMMARY:Dr. Ashmita Khasnabish Guest Lecture "Indian Imagination in a Postcolonial Context"
DESCRIPTION:The talk “Indian Imagination in a Postcolonial Context” is based on Dr. Ashmita Khasnabish’s recent monograph Negotiating Capability and Diaspora: a Philosophical Politics which analyses how Indian philosophical imagination could bring transcendence and immanence or pragmatism together. It starts with the Amartya Sen’s theory of “capability” which arose as a critique of the American philosopher John Rawls’s theory of Justice. Sen focuses on the notion of personal will- power which expresses the humanitarian aspect of his theory of capability. What is so fascinating about Sen’s theory of freedom? As a daughter of the East\, she admits that there is great potential in Sen’s theory of freedom because it is the freedom of the East that he advocates. She also examines Sri Aurobindo’s theory of the “religion of humanity\,” who fought against the British and was forced to leave India. Finally\, in the light of this philosophical background\, the talk addresses the Indian novelist Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel the Namesake as a product of Indian postcolonial imagination.

SUMMARY:Dr. Indira Viswanathan Peterson Guest Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Networks\, Indian Elites\, and the New Orientalism of the Royal Asiatic Society (1823-1840) \nIndira Viswanathan Peterson \nProfessor of Asian Studies Emerita\, Mount Holyoke College\, USA \n  \nThe establishment of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland in London in 1823 not only transferred the institutional center of British orientalism to the metropole but also indexed a reconceptualization of British antiquarian practices and goals vis à vis the colonies. A marker of this shift was the active recruitment of Asians\, especially princes and other elites\, in the Society’s membership and activities. The election of Raja Serfoji of Tanjore\, an enthusiastic orientalist as well as pioneering modernizer\, as one of four honorary members in 1823 is a case in point. Tracing Serfoji’s initiatives and his interactions with Sir Alexander Johnston and other British administrator-orientalists in Madras and south India\, and the Raja’s subsequent participation in the RAS’s activities\, this talk demonstrates that a south Indian orientalist network– the “Madras School” –played a significant role in shaping the agendas of the newly-founded Society. Further\, examining widely-publicised statements made by Sir Johnston during his long administrative career at the RAS\, it is argued that the Society’s projects involving its Asian members signaled a turn in British orientalism\, toward the promotion of a new mix of antiquarianism and the ideology of improving the colonies through useful knowledge. \nDr. Peterson held the David B. Truman Professorship at Mount Holyoke and has been Professor of Sanskrit at Columbia University. She specializes in Indian literature in Sanskrit\, Tamil and Marathi\, Hinduism\, South Indian culture\, history and religion\, classical dance and Karnatak music\, translation\, and European-Asian culture contact. She has published widely on all of these subjects.  She has held a number of research fellowships\, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, The American Institute for Indian Studies and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Major publications include: Poems to Shiva: The Hymns of the Tamil Saints (1989); Design and Rhetoric in a Sanskrit Court Epic: The Kiratarjuniya of Bharavi (2003); Arjuna and the Hunter (2016); and\, with George Michell\, The Great Temple at Thanjavur: A Thousand Years. 1010 – 2010 (2010). Two co-edited books are: with Martha A. Selby\, Tamil Geographies: Cultural Constructions of space and place in South India (2007); and with Davesh Soneji\, Performing Pasts: Reinventing the Arts in modern South India (2008). \nIndira Peterson has recently completed Serfoji of Tanjore: Enlightenment and Princely Modernity in Colonial India\, a biography of the royal polymath and innovator Serfoji II. In progress are Drama\, the Court\, and the Public in Early Modern India\, a monograph on the multilingual dance dramas of the Thanjavur Maratha court\, and An Enlightenment Library in Early Nineteenth-century India: The Personal Collection of King Serfoji II of Tanjore (1798-1832). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Festschrift for Professor Peter Robb (SOAS)
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch and Discussion: Memory\, Identity and the Colonial Encounter in India: Essays in Honour of Peter Robb\, edited by Ezra Rashkow\, Sanjukta Ghosh and Upal Chakrabarti \nTuesday\, April 10\, @ 6.00 to 8.00 pm \nVenue: The Royal Asiatic Society\, 14 Stephenson Way\, London\, NW1 2HD \nChair: Dr Gordon Johnson (President\, The Royal Asiatic Society) \n  \nEditors’ Introduction: Dr Ezra Rashkow (Montclair\, US)\, Dr Sanjukta Ghosh (SOAS) \nPanel Speakers: Prof Francis Robinson (RAS & Royal Holloway)\, Prof Ananya Jahanara Kabir (King’s College\, London)\, Prof Edward Simpson (SOAS South Asia Institute) \nEditors in Conversation with Prof Peter Robb (SOAS & RAS) \nDiscussion \nConcluding Remarks: Dr Clive Dewey (Leicester) and \nDr Eleanor Newbigin (SOAS\, History Department) \nDrinks Reception \nOrganisers: SOAS South Asia Institute\, Department of History (SOAS) and the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. \nContact: sg83 at soas.ac.uk; ssai at soas.ac.uk \nAmy Riach ar at royalasiaticsociety.org \n  \n  \nIn this celebratory book launch of Memory\, Identity and the Colonial Encounter in India: Essays in Honour of Peter Robb\, the volume’s editors will join in conversation with Professor Peter Robb and other distinguished panellists to discuss various analytical approaches to rethinking relationships between memory and identity during the period of British rule in the subcontinent. \n  \nThis festschrift is a tribute to Professor Peter Robb’s seminal contributions to a range of important debates in modern South Asian history. The papers in the volume are written by both senior and early career scholars in the field\, and many of these were presented at the SOAS history conference ‘Ideologies and Institutions: a conference to celebrate the career and works of Peter Robb’\, in September 2013. Drawing broadly from Robb’s lecture transcript on memorials included in the book\, the volume also engages with some of his other works. \n  \nThe publication of this collection of essays in the year of the SOAS centenary\, in late 2017\, coincided with the 70th year of India and Pakistan’s commemoration of independence and the Partition of 1947\, prompting a renewed interest in examining the legacy of the British Raj. Memory studies have proliferated in recent years based on an emotional understanding of the past\, but with a few exceptions\, they have predominantly focused on Partition and its aftermath in South Asia. The editors deviate from this frame to explore the memory of colonialism and imperialism by critically engaging with the ideas of encounters and emerging identities. \n  \nBy focusing on interactions\, relations and underlying meanings of the colonial experience\, the volume re-evaluates central\, long-standing debates about the historical impact of the Raj. The issues of memory\, identity and the legacy of the colonial encounter are woven together in a diverse range of essays on subjects such as colonial and nationalist memorials; British\, Eurasian\, Dalit and Adivasi identities; regional political configurations; and state initiatives and patterns of control. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/book-launch-and-discussion-memory-identity-and-the-colonial-encounter-in-india-essays-in-honour-of-tickets-43970130845 \nPublisher: Routledge   \nhttps://www.routledge.com/Memory-Identity-and-the-Colonial-Encounter-in-India-Essays-in-Honour/Rashkow-Ghosh-Chakrabarti/p/book/9781138237056 \nISBN:  9781138237056\nNumber of pages: 338 \n

SUMMARY:Illustrated Lecture: Buddhist Rock-Cut Monasteries of the Western Ghats Drs. George Michell and Gethin Rees
DESCRIPTION:RAS Event Flyer Final \n27 MARCH 2018 6.30PM; followed by wine reception\nROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY\n14 STEPHENSON WAY\nLONDON\, NW1 2HD\nPlease rsvp to: ar@royalasiaticosciety.org\nThis lecture marks the publication of an illustrated guidebook coauthored\nby the archaeologist Dr. Gethin Rees and the\narchitectural historian Dr. George Michell\, recently issued by the\nDeccan Heritage Foundation. The volume focuses not on the well\nknown rock-cut sites of Ajanta and Ellora\, but on the less visited\,\nbut no less significant sites near the towns of Nashik and Junnar\,\nand at Karla\, Bhaja Bedsa\, Kondane and Kanheri\, all in the rugged\nlandscape of the Westerrn Ghats in Maharashtra. Known as\nchaityas and viharas\, these magnificent shrines and dwellings\nwere cut into the basalt cliffs of the Western Ghats more than\n2\,000 years ago. They survive today as among the earliest and\nbest-preserved examples of Buddhist architecture and art in all\nIndia.\nLocated near to trade routes that wound their way through\nmountain passes\, linking the lucrative Arabian Sea ports of\npeninsular India to the Deccan hinterland\, the cutting of the caves\ntogether with their resident monks and nuns were supported by\nmerchants and craft guilds\, as well as by local kings and queens. In\nthe lecture Rees will discuss the historic\, economic and geographic\nbackground to the monasteries\, while Michell will focus on the\narchitectural developments during these early times and the\ncarvings that adorned the various shrines and dwellings.\nCopies of the 128 page guidebook may be purchased after the\nlecture at a cost of £15.00\, payable by cash or cheque only.

SUMMARY:Book Launch and Discussion: Malarial Subjects by Rohan Deb Roy
DESCRIPTION:Simon Layton (Chair). Speakers include Dr. Nayanika Mathur (Oxford)\, Professor Clare Anderson (Leicester)\, Professor Richard Drayton (King’s College\, London)\,\nDr. Sujit Sivasundaram (Cambridge)\, Professor Simon Schaffer (Cambridge) \nMalaria was considered one of the most widespread disease-causing entities in the nineteenth century. It was associated with a variety of frailties far beyond fevers\, ranging from idiocy to impotence. And yet\, it was not a self-contained category. The reconsolidation of malaria as a diagnostic category during this period happened within a wider context in which cinchona plants and their most valuable extract\, quinine\, were reinforced as objects of natural knowledge and social control. In India\, the exigencies and apparatuses of British imperial rule occasioned the close interactions between these histories. In the process\, British imperial rule became entangled with a network of nonhumans that included\, apart from cinchona plants and the drug quinine\, a range of objects described as malarial\, as well as mosquitoes. Malarial Subjects explores this history of the co-constitution of a cure and disease\, of British colonial rule and nonhumans\, and of science\, medicine and empire.\nPublisher: Cambridge University Press\nISBN: 9781107172364\nNumber of pages: 346\nWeight: 700 g\nDimensions: 228 x 152 x 21 mm
