DESCRIPTION:The courier firms that knitted the Qing Empire together: A brief account of China’s\nprivate letter hongs from late 18th century to early 20th century \nWeipin Tsai \nRoyal Holloway\, University of London \nLong before the Imperial Chinese Post Office was set up in 1896\, a postal system had existed for centuries. This was made up of a myriad of local\, privately-owned courier firms\, known collectively as ‘letter hongs’.  These firms were rooted in their home areas\, but collaborated extensively and by their peak in the late 19th century were able to provide services across the whole of China\, and indeed beyond its borders to the Chinese diaspora across the region. \nWhile there has been a huge amount of scholarship around China’s modernisation in this period – largely focused on institutionally directed or foreign-influenced developments – one area now only receiving attention is the network of communications that knitted the Qing Empire together. The letter hongs formed the largest and most significant element of that network\, a web of family-owned companies that established vital supply lines for information\, money and goods\, with a reach more fluid\, adaptable and extensive than even the government’s owned military information relay service. \nBeing mainly small\, privately-held organisations\, source materials are quite scarce. Decoding the covers of letters sent across network – quite literally\, the journeys taken are recorded in code on the covers themselves – provides a very useful source of material on how the hongs operated\, including routes taken\, transit times\, charges and so on\, while the letters themselves are fascinating social documents recording the intricacies of family and business life.

DESCRIPTION:China’s Little Mecca: Changing Islamic Landscapes of China’s Northwest in the Late Qing\, 1860-1911 \nThe events often known as the Great Northwestern Muslim Rebellion\, 1860-1874\, devastated the Islamic communities of the interior northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu. Long-established Islamic communities were wiped off the map\, whilst the resettlement of refugees and post-war bans on Muslim movement and residence reconfigured the contours of the religious landscapes of late Qing China. Hezhou\, now known as Linxia\, is famous in the present as ‘China’s Little Mecca’\, was the only major Islamic religious centre in the two provinces left standing. The result was a transformation of the ecumenical scene of the northwest. As Shaanxi Muslims rebuilt from scratch in their new communities\, the Hezhou Muslim military leadership used their close relationships to the local establishment and prestige to usher in a religious revival in their localities: building mosques and inviting preachers and educators and constructing a safe space for Islam within the ambiguous spaces of late Qing empire. This presentation explores this brief efflorescence in the Hezhou scene\, the significance of the 1895 He-Huang Rebellion as an event in the construction of a Chinese Islamic reformism and the legacies of the late 19th century for the modern Islamic landscape of the northwest. \nDr. Hannah Theaker is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford China Centre\, whose research explores religion\, ethnicity and migration in late imperial China.

Please register by the 30th November \nThe mid-eighteenth century began with the Marathas as the paramount power in India\, and in the next two decades\, they rose in power and prestige. In the Carnatic\, Bengal\, Rajputana\, Malwa\, Bundelkhand they were supreme\, and in Delhi\, the Marathas ruled while the Mughal king reigned. In this period when Nanasaheb Peshwa was at the helm\, the Maratha power reached its zenith. But that was not the entire story. The events of the mid-eighteenth century are pivotal\, and determined the course of the next five decades. The rise of the Europeans in the south and the east added a new dimension\, so that this epoch eventually emerged as the crossroad of Indian history. This book narrates that engrossing story. The book is published in hardcover\, with over 40 colour pictures on art plates and 27 maps and illustrations. The 500-page book is copiously annotated with over a thousand references and has a bibliography and a glossary along with an introduction to principal characters and important genealogies. \nUday S. Kulkarni has written six historical nonfiction books on 18th Century India. An alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and a surgeon by profession\, Kulkarni served in the Indian Navy retiring in the rank of Surgeon Commander.

SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. \n  \n  \nWhen Dr Wu Jieping was selected by Chinese Premier Zhou En lai as his personal physician\, he had little choice in the matter though it transformed his life\, not always in a positive way. \nOlivia Cox-Fill got to know Dr Wu Jieping following the death of Zhou En Lai and while Mao’s wife was still in prison. He had attended several of China’s leaders\, including Premier Zhou En Lai\, Chairman Mao\, Liu Shao Chi and Madame Mao. Over a period of three years\, Olivia Cox-Fill interviewed Dr Wu and gathered vivid and unique recollections of his contacts with the Chinese leadership. But Wu specified that none of these memories should be published until after his death\, which occurred in 2011\, since its frank revelations would lead to state repercussions. The memoir reveals the appalling conditions in China as experienced by one of its most famous doctors\, who carried out research into TB and kidney cancer while attending to the health of the country’s leaders. It also shows what it took to survive in Communist China at a time when most leading intellectuals were expelled to the countryside\, imprisoned or beaten to death. \n \n \n  \n

It will also provide a rare opportunity to get “up close and personal” with rarely seen artworks\, manuscripts\, archives\, photographs\, and early printed books from the Society’s collections. \nWe are delighted to welcome three speakers to discuss their experiences working with the Society’s collections: \n\nRebekah Harbord will talk about the conservation of fragile Indo-Persian miniature paintings of Laylá and Majnūn\, believed to date from the mid-sixteenth to mid-seventeenth century\nArantza Dobbels will discuss the conservation of several maps\, drawn by Indian artists in the 1830s\, depicting the sacred island of Sivasamudram and the bridge over the Kaveri river\nSonetra Seng will describe her work cataloguing and arranging photographs and other materials from the Society’s H.G. Quaritch Wales collections\, which document Hindu and Buddhist antiquities from South East Asia\n\nAs well as enjoying a presentation from each of our speakers\, attendees will have the opportunity to view the objects featured in the talks\, in addition to some other rarely-seen treasures from the collections. We will also welcome attendees with a reception including a glass of wine and light refreshments. \nWe hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a very enjoyable and stimulating occasion. In fact\, from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day\, Islamic society in its Middle Eastern heartlands hasbeen transformed by modern ideals and practices\, including the adoption of modern medicine\, the emergence of women from seclusion\, and the development of democracy. Islamic civilization has been undergoing an anguished transformation\, and the violence of an infinitesimally small minority is the blowback from this process. Christopher de Bellaigue tells the story of the scholars and scientists\, writers and statesmen who brought about these remarkable changes across society\, politics\, and the arts. Structuring his groundbreaking history around Istanbul\, Cairo\, and Tehran\, the three main loci of Islamic culture\, de Bellaigue introduces us to key figures and reformers\, from Egypt’s visionary ruler Muhammad Ali to radicals like Iran’s first feminist Qurrat al-Ayn and the writer Ibrahim Sinasi\, who transformed Ottoman Turkey’s language and literature. In doing so\, he challenges the ossified perceptions in Western culture that selfrighteously condemn the Muslim world as hopelessly benighted.\nThe Islamic Enlightenment shows the folly of Westerners demanding modernity from people whose lives are already drenched in it. SUMMARY:Free London Lecture 'Travelling and Collecting in the Dutch East Indies in the 1930s: the collections of Růžena Charlota Urbanová in the National Musuem\, Prague'
DESCRIPTION:The speaker will be Dr Fiona Kerlogue (Former Deputy Keeper of Anthropology at the Horniman Musuem) \nIn March 1938 the Czech author and painter Růžena Urbanová set off from Marseilles on a journey round the world. In the Dutch East Indies she made a substantial collection of objects\, now in the Náprstek Museum in Prague. Urbanová’s journey was abruptly ended when she was interned by the Japanese in 1942. She eventually returned to Europe in 1946. This talk\, illustrated with her photographs\, focusses on the kind of experiences which Urbanová\, and others travelling between the wars\, encountered. What kind of objects did she collect and what does this tell us about contacts and encounters between Indonesians and travellers? The talk is based on the book ‘Collecting Experience in the 1930s: Růžena Charltta Urbanová and her collection in the Náprstek Museum\, Prague’\, by Fiona Kerlogue and Dagmar Pospíšilová\, published in 2018 by the Prague National Museum. \nNo need to pre-book\, all welcome.
