During the first half of this presentation\, Roda Ahluwalia\, editor of the book\, will explore the diversity in chapters as well as common threads that run through them\, unifying the book in aesthetic and cultural identity.  \n  \nIn the second half of this presentation Kavita Singh\, Professor\, School of Arts and Aesthetics\, JNU\, Delhi\, will discuss her contribution to the volume in which she  discusses the text-image relationship of select examples from the Akbarnama\, Jahangirnama and Padshahnama to show significant divergences between the words and images that often faced each other across the page. She will focus on one of the examples discussed in her essay\, through which she will explore reasons for the ‘gaps’ between word and image and weave her way to a keen and perceptive conclusion.”

DESCRIPTION:Temples of Swat. The Shahi archaeological landscape. \nThe talk will report on the recent research at Barikot\, Swat\, Pakistan\, where excavations continued also in 2020. The ancient urban site\, known in Greek and Latin sources as Bazira/Beira\, between 700 and 1000 CE\, became a major Śāhi centre with palatial and cultic structures\, known as Vajira in epigraphic record of the end-10th century. Excavations on the acropolis revealed a large Brahmanical temple built by the Shahis of Kabul (c. 700 CE) and expanded under the so-called Hindu Shahis. The temple was demolished by the Ghaznavids in the 11th century\, when a military settlement was established at the site. Shahi temples were part of a complex landscape\, testified today by ruins of palaces\, castles\, and watchtowers. During our surface research three more Brahmanical temples were documented. The first temple was documented by Alfred Foucher at Zalamkot at the gates of the Swat valley along the ancient “Buddhist roads”. A second temple was identified by Harold Deane at Manyar (near Barikot). A third temple was found by Aurel Stein in the Talash valley not far from the junction between Swat and Panjkora rivers. The latter is not far from Afgahn Kunar\, where similar temples were documented by the German Hindukush Expedition in 1935. \nLuca M. Olivieri (PhD) \nUniversità Ca’ Foscari Venezia \nDipartimento di Studi sull’Asia e sull’Africa Mediterranea \nDirector \nISMEO Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan \n  \nLuca M. Olivieri is director of the ISMEO Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan. He has been working in Swat for more than thirty years. His principal interests include excavation\, survey\, and heritage management methodologies. In 2017 he was awarded with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz of Pakistan for his three decades of archaeological work in Swat. He has been Director of the ACT-Field School Project in Swat from 2011 to 2016\, which\, amongst other important achievements in the field of training\, archaeology and restoration\, managed to rebuild the Swat Museum\, as well as to restore the colossal Jahanabad Buddha\, both damaged during the insurgency. Dr. Olivieri has been working in Swat since 1987\, mainly focusing on the still on-going excavation project at the urban site of Bir-kot-ghwandai (Barikot)\, the ancient Bazira of Alexander the Great\, on rock-art field-research\, and on the Archaeological Map of the Swat Valley project.

DESCRIPTION:The courier firms that knitted the Qing Empire together: A brief account of China’s\nprivate letter hongs from late 18th century to early 20th century \nWeipin Tsai \nRoyal Holloway\, University of London \nLong before the Imperial Chinese Post Office was set up in 1896\, a postal system had existed for centuries. This was made up of a myriad of local\, privately-owned courier firms\, known collectively as ‘letter hongs’.  These firms were rooted in their home areas\, but collaborated extensively and by their peak in the late 19th century were able to provide services across the whole of China\, and indeed beyond its borders to the Chinese diaspora across the region. \nWhile there has been a huge amount of scholarship around China’s modernisation in this period – largely focused on institutionally directed or foreign-influenced developments – one area now only receiving attention is the network of communications that knitted the Qing Empire together. The letter hongs formed the largest and most significant element of that network\, a web of family-owned companies that established vital supply lines for information\, money and goods\, with a reach more fluid\, adaptable and extensive than even the government’s owned military information relay service. \nBeing mainly small\, privately-held organisations\, source materials are quite scarce. Decoding the covers of letters sent across network – quite literally\, the journeys taken are recorded in code on the covers themselves – provides a very useful source of material on how the hongs operated\, including routes taken\, transit times\, charges and so on\, while the letters themselves are fascinating social documents recording the intricacies of family and business life.

DESCRIPTION:China’s Little Mecca: Changing Islamic Landscapes of China’s Northwest in the Late Qing\, 1860-1911 \nThe events often known as the Great Northwestern Muslim Rebellion\, 1860-1874\, devastated the Islamic communities of the interior northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu. Long-established Islamic communities were wiped off the map\, whilst the resettlement of refugees and post-war bans on Muslim movement and residence reconfigured the contours of the religious landscapes of late Qing China. Hezhou\, now known as Linxia\, is famous in the present as ‘China’s Little Mecca’\, was the only major Islamic religious centre in the two provinces left standing. The result was a transformation of the ecumenical scene of the northwest. As Shaanxi Muslims rebuilt from scratch in their new communities\, the Hezhou Muslim military leadership used their close relationships to the local establishment and prestige to usher in a religious revival in their localities: building mosques and inviting preachers and educators and constructing a safe space for Islam within the ambiguous spaces of late Qing empire. This presentation explores this brief efflorescence in the Hezhou scene\, the significance of the 1895 He-Huang Rebellion as an event in the construction of a Chinese Islamic reformism and the legacies of the late 19th century for the modern Islamic landscape of the northwest. \nDr. Hannah Theaker is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford China Centre\, whose research explores religion\, ethnicity and migration in late imperial China.

Please register by the 30th November \nThe mid-eighteenth century began with the Marathas as the paramount power in India\, and in the next two decades\, they rose in power and prestige. In the Carnatic\, Bengal\, Rajputana\, Malwa\, Bundelkhand they were supreme\, and in Delhi\, the Marathas ruled while the Mughal king reigned. In this period when Nanasaheb Peshwa was at the helm\, the Maratha power reached its zenith. But that was not the entire story. The events of the mid-eighteenth century are pivotal\, and determined the course of the next five decades. The rise of the Europeans in the south and the east added a new dimension\, so that this epoch eventually emerged as the crossroad of Indian history. This book narrates that engrossing story. The book is published in hardcover\, with over 40 colour pictures on art plates and 27 maps and illustrations. The 500-page book is copiously annotated with over a thousand references and has a bibliography and a glossary along with an introduction to principal characters and important genealogies. \nUday S. Kulkarni has written six historical nonfiction books on 18th Century India. An alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune and a surgeon by profession\, Kulkarni served in the Indian Navy retiring in the rank of Surgeon Commander.

As with similar occasions in the past\, the evening will feature a series of short talks\, providing a rare opportunity to hear in detail about work that has been done to conserve\, catalogue\, and understand treasures from the Society’s historic collections. \nWe are delighted to welcome three speakers to discuss their experiences working with RAS collections: \n\nRebekah Harbord will talk about the conservation of fragile Indo-Persian miniature paintings of Laylá and Majnūn\, believed to date from the mid-sixteenth to mid-seventeenth century\nArantza Dobbels will discuss the conservation of several maps\, drawn by Indian artists in the 1830s\, depicting the sacred island of Sivasamudram and the bridge over the Kaveri river\nSonetra Seng will describe her work cataloguing and arranging photographs and other materials from the Society’s H.G.
