DESCRIPTION:For Zoom registration please email Matty Bradley at mb@royalasiaticsociety.org \n  \nProfessor Carole Hillenbrand was appointed Professor of Islamic History in 2000 at the University of Edinburgh and was awarded an OBE for services to Higher Education in 2009. In 2005\, she was awarded the King Faisal Prize for Islamic Studies\, (the first non-Muslim to be awarded this prize) and  in 2016 the British Academy/ Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize for Transcultural Understanding. Her research interests include the Crusades\, the Seljuqs of Iran and Turkey\,  and  medieval Muslim political thought\, especially the work of al-Ghazali.  She is the author of five major books\, the editor of three major volumes and numerous articles.  Her book  The Crusades: Islamic Perspectives published by Edinburgh University Press in 1999\, was the first to examine in depth the Crusades from the Muslim point of view. Her most recent edited volume\, expected in August 2019\, is entitled Syria in Crusader Times: Conflict and Co-existence. \n  \nProfessor Robert Hillenbrand is Professor of Art History at the University of St. Andrews and is Honorary Professorial fellow at the University of Edinburgh where he was appointed Professor of Islamic Art in 1989. He is a prolific scholar whose interests focus on Islamic architecture\, painting and iconography\, with particular reference to Iran and early Islamic Syria. His nine books include the prize-winning Islamic Architecture: Form\, Function and Meaning\, (1995)\, Islamic Art and Architecture (1999)\, The Architecture of Ottoman Jerusalem: An  introduction (2002) and Studies in Medieval Islamic Architecture (2 vols.2001-2). In addition\, he has co-authored\, edited and co-edited twelve books including The Art of the Saljuqs in Iran and Anatolia (1997)\, Persian Painting from the Mongols to the Qajars\, (2001)\, Shahnama: The Visual Language of the Persian Book of Kings\, (2004) and Image and Meaning in Islamic Art\, (2005) and Ferdowsi \, the Mongols and the History of Iran: Art\, Literature and Culture from Early Islam to the Qajar Persia\, (2013). He has also published some 170 articles on aspects of Islamic art and architecture.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 6.30pm on Monday 13th December for the book launch of Leena Dhingra’s Exhumation: The Life and Death of Madan Lal Dhingra. \n \n\n\n\n\nOn 17th August 1909\, Madan Lal Dhingra was executed in Pentonville Prison for the assassination of Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie\, a high-ranking official from the British India office. Viewed as a murderer in the UK\, in India Madan Lal is seen as a great patriot\, a freedom fighter\, and a martyr. In 1976\, his remains were exhumed\, and his body returned to India. In Exhumation\, Madan Lal’s great niece\, the actor and writer Leena Dhingra\, unravels and reveals his remarkable story. \nPart history\, part memoir\, this is also the story of Leena’s journey to come to terms with this painful episode from her family’s past. Exhumation: The Life and Death of Madan Lal Dhingra is a compelling story of family secrets that throws light on the dark legacy of colonialism. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLeena Dhingra was born in India\, and came to Europe after the 1947 Partition of India. SUMMARY:Dr. Jennifer Howes: The Story Tellers of Mysore: Tipu Sultan's female entourage and the 1806 Vellore Mutiny
DESCRIPTION:After the Fourth Mysore War\, when the British were dismantling Tipu Sultan’s establishment\, the East India Company unexpectedly took charge of 601 women who resided permanently inside Srirangapatnam Palace. Along with Tipu’s sons\, they were moved 200 miles east\, to Vellore Fort\, in the Company-controlled territory of Madras Presidency. Documentation about these court women held in colonial archives describes moments when they behaved in unexpectedly difficult ways. Because historians have traditionally cast the women of Tipu Sultan’s court as voiceless victims\, their actions\, as described in these colonial sources\, have been overlooked. When examined\, the descriptions show that they were using the domestic powers granted to them under Tipu Sultan’s establishment to influence their treatment by the East India Company. By placing these accounts alongside the broader context of the Company’s military history\, it becomes apparent that the women of Tipu Sultan’s female entourage fomented the events that led to the Vellore Mutiny of 1806.
