DESCRIPTION:  \nDating from the fifth to the fourteenth century\, the Mogao Caves near the oasis of Dunhuang in northwestern China contain a wealth of information charting the flows and interactions of diverse cultures across Eurasia. Donor portraits in particular furnish a remarkable range of data on the ethnicity\, interregional relations\, politics\, and the social and religious status of the caves’ patrons. Of the thousands of donor portraits painted on the walls of the Mogao Caves\, one in particular stands out for its size\, meticulously painted details\, and unique iconography\, that in Mogao Cave 98 of Viśa‘ Saṃbhava (Li Shengtian 李聖天)\, the King of Khotan (r. 912–c.966) and ally of the ruling élites of Dunhuang.  Scholars typically consider his royal regalia to be Chinese in origin and style\, and the king the representative of a Buddhist kingdom. However\, a detailed analysis of the portrait demonstrates neither is the case. Instead\, his garb and adjacent symbols reveal a richly coherent network of iconography and accoutrements Iranian in origin and Sasanian at heart\, foregrounding core concepts of divine kingship as predicated on xwarrah\, ‘divine glory.’ Drawing on a wide array of visual and material resources such as sculpture\, metalware\, and numismatic evidence from Iran and Central Asia\, this talk presents for the first time a thoroughly revised analysis of Viśa‘ Saṃbhava’s portrait. I demonstrate how the royal costume and associate ornamental motifs belong to a shared visual culture of imperial legitimacy grounded in symbols of investiture that span a vast geographical and temporal range\, here still very much authoritative during the 10th century in a largely Chinese context. Given our lack of knowledge about non-Buddhist aspects of Khotan\, this portrait and its sacral imagery are invaluable for reevaluating fundamental notions of sovereignty in the Kingdom of Khotan. \n  \nDr. Neil Schmid is Research Professor at the Dunhuang Academy in the Centre for Silk Road and Dunhuang Comparative Research. But for many of its advocates from the 1770s to the 1850s it was also the world’s most enlightened one. Joshua Ehrlich reveals that a commitment to knowledge was integral to the Company’s ideology. He shows how the Company cited this commitment in defense of its increasingly fraught union of commercial and political power. He moves beyond studies of orientalism\, colonial knowledge\, and information with a new approach: the history of ideas of knowledge. SUMMARY:The View from RAS Beijing: China\, Technology\, Community and the Future (Alan Babington-Smith and Melinda Liu)
DESCRIPTION:  \n      Coming from two people who’ve resided in China for more than two decades each\, this easily could sound like a survival guide for  living and working in Beijing.  However\, the key to why a society such as RASBJ has been able to survive — and thrive — in the challenging environment of China is a bigger story.  And it’s a story in which the RAS legacy has been a source of inspiration. \n    RASBJ was fortunate enough to triple its membership during the pandemic years. Many people have asked us how this happened.  Luck was a factor.  However\, this is also a story of harnessing new tools\, new technologies\, and new strategies.  It’s a story of trying to nurture a community of internationally minded people — during an intensely difficult period in China — by looking beyond borders. It’s a story of improving the quality and accessibility of what we offer\, by seeking both big-name contributors and also fresh talent around the globe\, and by putting their stories online.   \n    It’s a story of how a modest society in Beijing reached outward\, in space and time\, to find fresh perspectives and new ways to collaborate with like-minded partners. That outreach strengthened and enlivened our community back home. With RASBJ just ten years old this year\, it’s a story of what connects us to your prominent Society which is celebrating\, with well-justified pride\, its Bicentennial. We are honored and grateful to Alison and Gordon and others for including us in your activities. This year’s memorable Rajasthan expedition was the trip of a lifetime. It triggered massive interest among our members.  It helped strengthen our 2022 commitment towards a new initiative for the public good\, which RASBJ will launch this autumn. And it’s an example of how the RAS legacy continues to inspire.

SUMMARY:Stephen Simmons: Maymyo Days: Forgotten Lives of a Burma Hill Station
DESCRIPTION:The title of the book is Maymyo Days\, but it is really the sub title\, Forgotten Lives of a Burma Hill Station which best describes what the book is really all about – I have written about some\, as is the case with most of us ordinary\, ‘normal’ people\, who lived in the Shan Hills\, ordinary people but people who did some extraordinary things. Some turned out to be gifted\, a few were courageous\, others tragic\, whose lives I first stumbled upon around 20 years ago in Rangoon: amongst others\, Henry Morshead\, a Royal Engineer who got to within a shout of the summit of Everest with George Mallory (Morshead later murdered in Maymyo)\, Princesses Ma Lat and Yadana Nat Mai – Shan Princesses who lead risky and fascinating lives\, General Po Yay – a Karen who won an MC in Burma during the war\, ‘Elephant Bill’ of the Bombay Burma Trading Corporation\, Charlotte Wheeler Cuffe who painted orchids and rhododendron in Burma and who turned out to be  a quite superb\, ‘amateur’ artist (her art is jealously guarded by Glasnevin Botanical Gardens in Dublin). \nWhilst the book is not a current affairs book\, rather a series of mini biographies of extraordinary people I do nevertheless update on the (terrible) state of things in Burma now. \nThe talk lasts for 40 minutes and I include 32 slides. The book\, published by Narisa Chakrabongse’s River Books in Bangkok\, is heavily illustrated.

DESCRIPTION:Chinese woodblock prints were once made in their millions\, but now the art is dying out. Using about 40 prints from his collection\, David Leffman presents some of the different types: bright and cheerful new year prints\, fierce door guardians and talismans\, “paper horse” deity prints\, and action-packed nineteenth-century propaganda. The talk investigates the hidden meanings\, social commentary\, history and folklore behind each print\, how and where they were made\, and the challenges faced by the remaining printing centres and craftsmen.

SUMMARY:Prof. Wayne Patterson: William Nelson Lovatt in Late Qing China
DESCRIPTION:William Nelson Lovatt in Late Qing China looks at the Imperial Maritime Customs Service and the final decades of the last Chinese dynasty through the lens of a British-American who served as a Tidesurveyor at nearly a dozen treaty ports.  Rather than focusing on Inspector-General Sir Robert Hart with a top-down approach\, Lovatt’s perspective is from the bottom-up\, where there is little in the way of primary documentation\, particularly for the nineteenth century.  Lovatt arrived in China as a soldier in the British army during the Second Opium War\, but remained in China to enter the customs service\, and initially trained Chinese soldiers in three other conflicts as part of the Cooperative Policy:  the Taiping\, Nian\, and the Japanese invasion of Taiwan.  In his more than four decades he interacted with missionaries\, diplomats\, fellow customs officers\, IG Hart\, and Chinese of all stripes due to his fluency in the language.  Lovatt provides an inside look at Chinese society and the treaty port system unlike few others.  Additionally\, Lovatt may have prevented Hart’s plan to annex the Korean customs service allowing Li Hongzhang to continue to control that county indirectly.
