SUMMARY:Dr James White: Community Formation and the Edges of Empire: Panegyric Poetry in Sanʿaʾ and Isfahan\, 1670-1690.
DESCRIPTION:Dr James White is Departmental Lecturer of Persian Studies at Oxford University. His research focuses on multilingualism and the social uses of poetry in the Middle East and South Asia during the late medieval and early modern periods. \n  \nTalk Abstract: \nDuring the latter half of the seventeenth century\, the question of who wielded – and ought to wield – political authority was hotly debated in polities across the western Indian Ocean. Smaller states\, and even exiled scions of large empires\, had their own visions of kingship which called the territorial ambitions of the Ottomans\, Safavids and Mughals into question. In this talk\, I explore political thought in early modern Yemen and Iran\, examining how the polythematic ode (qaṣīda) was used to mould the convictions of audiences. I will compare the writing of al-Ṣārim al-Hindī (d. 1689-90)\, a poet at the court of the Qāsimī Imamate in northern Yemen\, with the verse of Najīb Kāshānī (d. 1711-12)\, who wrote panegyrics to the Mughal prince Akbar during the latter’s exile in Isfahan. I aim to show how the circulation of poetry and transregional networks affected political discourse in communities that stood on the edges of empire.

SUMMARY:Ann Wilks (CBE) - Britain’s Man on the Spot in Iraq and Afghanistan
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nThe newly discovered papers and colourfully-written letters of Anglo-Irish Sir Henry Dobbs\, which form the backbone of this book\, reveal his importance in the development of the modern Middle East. \nAn influential civil servant and Britain’s longest serving High Commissioner in Iraq at a time when the British empire was facing increasing challenges to its once dominant position\, he describes the difficulties of governing first in India then in the formerly Ottoman Mesopotamia during WW1. Here\, Dobbs had to devise administrative systems while often at odds with his superior\, Sir Percy Cox. In the discussions that followed the Third Afghan War\, Dobbs manoeuvred between the different views in London and Delhi with great dexterity to negotiate alone with the Amir of Afghanistan the enduring 1921 Anglo-Afghan treaty. \nHaving accepted from the League of Nations the responsibility for taking the newly-created Iraq to sustainable independence in the aftermath of WW1\, the cash-strapped British government came under great domestic pressure to abandon it. Key to British support continuing was Iraqi acceptance of the controversial 1922 treaty with Britain. This Dobbs achieved by disregarding the unhelpful approach recommended by London and\, risking his career\, he pressed on with his own wholly unauthorised tactics. In other initiatives\, Dobbs ensured that Mosul province remained within Iraq. Dobbs consistently pressed for Iraq’s early independence – granted in 1932\, the first territory in the former Ottoman Empire to gain it. \nAn early advocate of self-determination Dobbs was frequently at odds with the more traditional imperial approach of his superiors. He always endeavoured to balance the aspirations and needs of overseas communities for whom he was responsible with the interests of Britain which he represented.

DESCRIPTION:Robin Masefield’s latest book\, published by Queen’s University Belfast\, is entitled The World Administered by Irishmen: The Life and Times of Robert Hart and Irish Contemporaries in East Asia. \nWhile\, the initial focus is on the Chinese Maritime Customs Service\, and the Ulsterman Sir Robert Hart who led it for 45 years\, the book brings together a treasure trove of other Irish people in East Asia – men from Ulster in the Customs Service; a nurse from Roscommon; a doctor from Cork; a diplomat from Meath; Hong Kong governors from Dublin; and many more. Using first-hand accounts where possible\, the book vividly brings to life the special contribution that Irish men and women made to developing relations with China\, Japan and Korea in the 19th century. It is illustrated with three hundred images. \nRobin Masefield worked in Hong Kong in the 1980s\, and this is his third book with an Asian focus. He was awarded the CBE in 2003. \nSince retiring in Belfast in 2010\, he has written a number of books\, including three on aspects of local history in North Down. \nHe and his wife\, Rosemary\, moved to Surrey in autumn 2023. SUMMARY:Dr Neil Schmid (Dunhuang Academy) King of Kings: Vestiges of Sasanian Sacral Kingship in 10th Century Dunhuang
DESCRIPTION:  \nDating from the fifth to the fourteenth century\, the Mogao Caves near the oasis of Dunhuang in northwestern China contain a wealth of information charting the flows and interactions of diverse cultures across Eurasia. Donor portraits in particular furnish a remarkable range of data on the ethnicity\, interregional relations\, politics\, and the social and religious status of the caves’ patrons. Of the thousands of donor portraits painted on the walls of the Mogao Caves\, one in particular stands out for its size\, meticulously painted details\, and unique iconography\, that in Mogao Cave 98 of Viśa‘ Saṃbhava (Li Shengtian 李聖天)\, the King of Khotan (r. 912–c.966) and ally of the ruling élites of Dunhuang.  Scholars typically consider his royal regalia to be Chinese in origin and style\, and the king the representative of a Buddhist kingdom. However\, a detailed analysis of the portrait demonstrates neither is the case. Instead\, his garb and adjacent symbols reveal a richly coherent network of iconography and accoutrements Iranian in origin and Sasanian at heart\, foregrounding core concepts of divine kingship as predicated on xwarrah\, ‘divine glory.’ Drawing on a wide array of visual and material resources such as sculpture\, metalware\, and numismatic evidence from Iran and Central Asia\, this talk presents for the first time a thoroughly revised analysis of Viśa‘ Saṃbhava’s portrait. I demonstrate how the royal costume and associate ornamental motifs belong to a shared visual culture of imperial legitimacy grounded in symbols of investiture that span a vast geographical and temporal range\, here still very much authoritative during the 10th century in a largely Chinese context. Given our lack of knowledge about non-Buddhist aspects of Khotan\, this portrait and its sacral imagery are invaluable for reevaluating fundamental notions of sovereignty in the Kingdom of Khotan. \n  \nDr. Neil Schmid is Research Professor at the Dunhuang Academy in the Centre for Silk Road and Dunhuang Comparative Research. DESCRIPTION:Date:   Friday 1st December\, 2023 \nTime:   19:00-21:00 \nVenue: Djam Lecture Theatre\nSOAS Main Building\n10 Thornhaugh Street\, Russell Square\nLondon WC1H 0XG \n  \nThe Meridian Society is delighted to present the above event in association with the Royal Asiatic Society\, the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding and the SOAS Chinese Culture Society. \n  \nVisitors to the exhibition CHINA’S HIDDEN CENTURY at the British Museum over the past months will no doubt have been astonished by the cultural creativity that emerged during the last hundred years of the Qing Dynasty despite the social\, economic and political upheavals of the time. We are therefore very pleased to invite Jessica Harrison-Hall\, the museum’s Head of China Section and the exhibition’s lead curator\, to give a retrospective view of the exhibition. \n  \nFollowing the talk\, Ms Harrison-Hall will be joined by Dr Lars Laamann\, Senior Lecturer in the History of China at SOAS\, and Dr Hwee-San Tan\, Research Associate in Ethnomusicology at SOAS\, for a panel discussion on this period of history. \n  \nThe talk will be topped and tailed by performances of Qing court music performed by the SOAS Sizhu Ensemble. \n  \nThe event is free\, but donations are welcome and all proceeds will go to the SOAS Sizhu Ensemble to fund their trip to Portugal next year. \n  \nPlease RSVP to themeridiansociety@gmail.com if you are planning to attend.
