SUMMARY:Paul Bromberg Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Thai Silverware: \nPaul Bromberg will present a talk on “Thai Silver and Nielloware”\, which display exquisite craftsmanship and design to rival better-known genres of silver from Asia. However\, there has to date been little research undertaken about this fascinating subject. Bromberg will examine the history and scope of specified Thai silver and nielloware production dating from the early 19th century to the present\, as well as the various forms and designs utilised. \nPaul Bromberg is the serving editor of the Journal of the Siam Society and a contributing editor to Arts of Asia magazine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society\, a lifetime member of both the Siam Society and the Southeast Asian Ceramics Society\, and writes and lectures regularly about Thai art and antiques. He has been living in Asia since 1985\, and resident in Bangkok since 1997. He read Modern Chinese Studies at the University of Leeds\, and also studied at Fudan University\, Shanghai\, and Xiamen University\, Fujian province. He was an editorial advisor to Bencharong & Chinaware  in the Court of Siam (2011)\, a contributing author to Royal Porcelain from Siam: Unpacking the Ring Collection (2013) and the author of THAI SILVER and Nielloware (2019).

SUMMARY:Dr. Philip Mansel (Author)
DESCRIPTION:The Sun King and the Sultan: Louis XIV and the Ottoman Empire. \n \nUsing unpublished archives and drawings\,  Dr Philip Mansel shows that the traditional alliance between France and the Ottoman Empire became a corner-stone of French foreign policy under Louis XIV. In 1688 Louis XIV sent French armies across the Rhine in order to reduce Imperial pressure on the Ottoman Empire. In 1709-10\, the French ambassador in Constantinople arranged grain shipments from throughout the Ottoman empire to save France from starvation. Meanwhile French artists and writers spread the fashion for turqueries in Europe: Antoine Galland translated the 1001 Nights into French\, Jean Baptiste Vanmour painted the costumes and professions of the Levant\, as well as the reception of the French ambassador by the Sultan. At the same time\, pursuing a double policy\,  Louis XIV was in contact with discontented Christian leaders in Aleppo and other provinces\, and sent French engineers to survey Ottoman ports\, from Constantinople to Alexandria\, to facilitate French conquests in case the Ottoman Empire collapsed. \n  \nDr. Philip Mansel’s books include Sultans in Splendour: Monarchs of the Middle East 1869-1945 (1988); Constantinople\, City of the World’s Desire (1995); and Levant: Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean (2010).  King of the World: the life of Louis XIV\, published by Penguin in July 2019 is his latest book. \n
